The Song: Inside and Out Episode #0012 “Death Watch Blues”

We have known Rachel Brooke for years and she has been on IBWIP more times than any other artist… EVER! This time she joins us to talk about her song, “Death Watch Blues” which also features Lonesome Wyatt. The song is on their album “Bad Omen”. It was great to catch up with Rachel and discuss songwriting, following up “A Bitter Harvest”, and more. We talk about what inspired “Death Watch Blues” as well as the collaboration process between her and Lonesome Wyatt. We talk about touring, and her upcoming 7” record. It’s always great to have Rachel on the show. She is an amazing singer and songwriter and well worth checking out.

The Song: Inside and Out Episode #0011 “Husk”

I think this was one of the funnest interviews I have done in a long time. I also found out very quickly that I didn’t do enough research for this interview. Michael Rank has been played many times on IBWIP but this was my first chance to talk to him. In this episode we talk about his song “Husk” from his brand new album “Horsehair” that was released on September 22nd. We also talk about songwriting, goats, and his the difference from being an independent artist vs. being with a label. This is where I wasn’t educated… Michael was in a band called Snatches of Pink in the mid 80’s. Michael talks a little about that experience as well as provides us with the track “Rocks” which we play at the end of the interview. We had a great time and hope you have as much fun learning about Michael as we did.

We are pleased to have this guy on the show. Rusty Knuckles recording artist Husky Burnette comes on the show to talk about re-issuing his latest album, “Tales From East End Blvd” which will feature 4 bonus tracks. During the interview we chat about his song, “East End Blvd” as well as a new album he will be releasing later this year. We also talk about writing songs in the Blues genre, his songwriting process, and of course guitars. The Song: Inside and Out Episode #0009 “Woman”

In my opinion PeeWee Moore is one of the last “American Outlaws” and that is also the name of his new record. This record is jam packed with 16 tracks of everything from trucker songs, honky tonk songs, and of course his song “Woman”. Find out what inspired PeeWee to write the song as well as a train interrupting our interview. He talks a little about his guitar setup and his songwriting process. Also find out how married life is treating him and what he has planned for this fall.

The Song: Inside and Out Episode #0008 “The Juniper Tree”

We welcome back our great friend Slackeye Slim to the show. In this episode we talk about his song “The Juniper Tree” from the album “Giving My Bones To The Western Plains”. He dives into the inspiration for the song and how the West has inspired him. Slim also talks about how his songwriting has changed since “Texas Whore Pleaser” and he leaks a little tidbit about what he is starting to work on for the next album. Slackeye Slim has been a long time friend of IBWIP and we were glad to have him back on the show.

The Song: Inside and Out Episode #0007 “Willy Tea Taylor”

I can’t describe what it felt like to get a text message from the one and only Willy Tea Taylor saying that he would be happy to be on the show. Thanks to Ray Vietti from The Harmed Brothers for helping make my bucket list complete. Willy Tea is one of those songwriters that comes along once in a lifetime. In this interview (besides stumbling over my words the whole time) Willy talks about his song “Hummingbird”. He talks about how a chord progression made it’s way back to him and how a bird lead him to write this amazing song. We talked about what baseball and songwriting have in common and for the first time ever on the show, we find ourselves finding out the story behind another song “Molly Rose”. It’s a double hit of Willy Tea Taylor in this special episode of the show.

The Song: Inside and Out Episode #0006 “Justin Wells”

Even though Fifth On The Floor is no longer making music together, Justin Wells ventures on to a new solo career. When I approached Justin about doing the show, I asked him which of his songs was the most intimate that he had written. He chose “Shotgun” from Fifth On The Floors 2013 album, “Ashes and Angels”. We talk about the first time we met, the inspiration and story behind the song, and disruptive people in the crowd at shows. We also discuss Justin preparing to hit the studio for his upcoming solo album. Justin is an amazing singer/songwriter and you don’t want to miss this interview.

The Song: Inside and Out Episode #0005 “Paul James”

I have had a bucket list of people that I have wanted to interview over the past 8 years and my guest for this episode, Possessed By Paul James, was at the top of that list. A longtime friend of IBWIP, Brooklyn Hellbetty, requested we ask him to discuss his song “The Color Of My Bloody Nose” from his 2010 release “Feed The Family”. In the interview he talks about what inspired him to write the song, the amount of requests for the song he still gets, and much more. He also talks about his late start into music, and how he would explain this song to his children when they get older. I could have talked to PPJ for hours but his 4 year old son wanted to play legos and that was a good enough reason to wrap up the interview in my book. It was a perfect example of a man with the right priorities. It was an honor to finally have the chance to talk to this amazing songwriter, musician, and all around person in Possessed By Paul James.
