Episode #0033 (02/03/2009)

On February 17th, The Hank in Chains Show returns on its new home, Ustream.tv! In addition to the great music from all genres that you’ve come to expect, the first Ustream episode of the show will focus the music of Warren Zevon. It isn’t the first time we’ve featured Zevon, and it certainly will not the last. This time, we will be taking a look at a few different styles and themes of the sadly underrated late singer/songwriter who was far more than “Werewolves of London”. Make sure to be a part of the show’s new era and tune in!

Other music this week from: John Lennon, Porter Wagoner, Dana Fuchs, Led Zeppelin, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The White Stripes, Robbie Fulks, Steve Earle, Hank Williams III, Split Lip Rayfield, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, and BR5-49.

The Hank in Chains Show
Episode #0032 (01/27/2009)

This week on The Hank in Chains Show, we will feature Ray Wylie Hubbard‘s new album “A. Enlightenment B. Endarkenment”. While he has achieved much fame in the world of mainstream music, Hubbard, a Texas legend, has been writing outstanding songs for decades, and the new release lives up to his legacy. With a country sound fused with a heavy dose of blues and Hubbard’s as usual brilliant lyricism, “A. Enlightenment B. Endarkenment” is a must hear record.

Other music this week from: John Fogerty, Nirvana, James Hand, Dinosaur Jr., Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Clutch, Warren Zevon, The Dead Weather, The Reverend Horton Heat, Joey Allcorn, Bob Dylan, and Chris Scruggs.

This week on The Hank in Chains Show, we will feature Nirvana‘s new live album, “Live at Reading”. It had been a little less than a year since their legendary album Nevermind had been released, and while Kurt Cobain and company were live show legends in the underground rock scene, mainstream America was still becoming acquainted with the band. This 1992 show though, which has been bootlegged for years, helped to further cement Nirvana’s legend. Considered in many circles to be one of the greatest live shows in the history of rock and roll, it has finally been given the official release it has deserved for years.

Other music this week from: Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Brian McGee and the Hollow Speed, Watermelon Slim, Mudhoney, Loretta Lynn, Warren Zevon, Alice in Chains, Scott H. Biram, Gram Parsons, William Elliott Whitmore, and Joe Grushecky.

The Hank in Chains Show
Episode #0027 (11/18/2009)

This week’s episode of The Hank in Chains Show features Alice in Chains‘ first new album in over 13 years, “Black Gives Way to Blue”. Marred by addiction and the eventual tragic death of founding lead vocalist Layne Staley of 2002, only a few years ago no one ever assumed we’d ever hear from Alice in Chains again. However, after a few special reunion shows, guitarist Jerry Cantrell, bassist Mike Inez, and drummer Sean Kinney got the itch to bring the band back. They recruited former Comes with the Fall vocalist William DuVall to recreate Alice in Chains’ outstanding harmony vocals. People doubted the band, especially DuVall, but “Black Gives Way to Blue” has proven the critics wrong in a big way.

Other music this week from: The Drive-By Truckers, Warren Zevon, Hank Williams III, The Reverend Horton Heat, Eleven Hundred Springs, Gram Parsons, George Harrison, The Kinks, Stone Temple Pilots, Songs from the Road Band, The Black Keys, and Jimi Hendrix.

On July 1st, The Hank in Chains Show will feature BR549 frontman Chuck Mead‘s first solo album Journeyman’s Wager. While there are hints of BR549 in spots, the Ray Kennedy produced album finds Mead exploring his many musical influences. A little CCR here, a little Beatles there, and even a little Springsteen. Yet, the album is a cohesive rockin’ country force, and a record of the year contender.

Artists/bands on this week’s show include: Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Lucky Tubb, Muddy Waters, The .357 String Band, Louis Jordan, Hank Williams III, Songs from the Road Band, Warren Zevon, The Rolling Stones, The Hackensaw Boys, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Cornpone.

Episode 18 of The Hank in Chains Show will feature the music of Kris Kristofferson. While his whiskey and cigarettes voice has prevented him from achieving the kind of stardom that his contemporaries Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings enjoyed, Kristofferson has always been the superior writer. A Rhodes Scholar, few songwriters in the history of music have had his masterful lyrical ability.

Artists/bands on this week’s show include: John Fogerty, The Black Keys, Willie Phoenix, Townes Van Zandt, Chris Duarte, Black Gasoline, Warren Zevon, Hank Williams III, Dave Arcari, The Drive-By Truckers, John Prine, Those Poor Bastards, and Justin Townes Earle.

The Hank in Chains Show
Episode #0014 (09/24/2008)

Episode 14 of The Hank in Chains Show will feature one of the greatest, and darkest, albums in the history of music: Bruce Springsteen‘s 1982 release “Nebraska”. Originally intended to be recorded as a full E-Street Band album, Springsteen instead decided to release the album as it was recorded: a collection of solo acoustic home recordings. A dark road trip across the economically depressed Great Plains, “Nebraska”, with its sometimes desperate characters, is a unique listening experience… especially with all of the lights turned off. Eric Morningstar and Jared Morningstar will examine this masterpiece of a recording, and discuss why it’s so memorable… even for people who don’t generally enjoy Springsteen‘s music.

Artists/bands on this week’s show include: Old Crow Medicine Show, Ray Wylie Hubbard, The Hard Left, Dana Fuchs, Warren Zevon, Jordan Zevon, Justin Townes Earle, Whitey Morgan and the 78s, Omar and the Howlers, The Smokin Bandits, and Eddie Cochran.

The Hank in Chains Show (06/25/2008)
Episode #0002

Episode 2 of The Hank in Chains Show includes not only great music and commentary, but, with the help of my co-host and psychology-genius brother Eric Morningstar, an in-depth look at the music of Warren Zevon. A unique singer-songwriter, Zevon wrote devilishly evil, funny, and yet intelligent lyrics that revealed a complex, compelling soul. A moralist in cynic’s clothing according to Springsteen, Zevon was never understood by the majority of mainstream music listeners. And yet, for those of you who aren’t afraid to look deeper into an artist’s words, appreciate dark humor, and simply love great rock and roll… this week’s show will be a must-listen event. Artists/Bands on this week’s show include: Nirvana, John Lennon, George Harrison, Dollar Store, Jason Isbell, Chuck Berry, Dwight Yoakam, Jakob Dylan, Those Poor Bastards, Jerry Cantrell, and Jimi Hendrix.
